To ensure you and your family receive the most up-to-date eye care, our staff members are trained on the latest technology and techniques to make your visit as comfortable and effective as possible.

We are an independent, locally owned optometry practice. Des Moines Eye care was established by Dr. Dave Hansen in 1988 and was later bought out by Dr. John Kruger in 2004. Dr. Michael Kruger graduated from Ohio State University and joined his father’s private practice in 2004 and worked along side him until his retirement in 2013.

Michael J. Kruger, O.D.

Michael J. Kruger attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa from 1996 until receiving his B.S. degree in 2000. Later that year, he attended The Ohio State University College of Optometry in Columbus, Ohio and received his O.D. degree in 2004. Dr. Kruger joined his father’s private practice in July 2004, working in both the Ames and Des Moines locations. In 2012 Dr. Kruger purchased the practice upon his father’s retirement.

Dr. Kruger and his wife, Heather, have two children, Braden and Breanna.

Matthew J. Donner, O.D

Matthew J. Donner attended the University of Iowa College of Engineering from 2001 until receiving his B.S.E. degree in Biomedical Engineering in May 2005. He then attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee where he graduated cum laude in May 2009. While in optometry school, Dr. Donner completed internships in Fort Dodge, Memphis, and Chicago. Upon graduation, Dr. Donner returned to his hometown of Ottumwa to practice in a busy ophthalmology clinic before joining Dr. Kruger in the Des Moines and Ames offices in 2013.

In Dr. Donner’s spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife Devin. They enjoy running, hiking, and playing with their spoiled dogs. He is also an avid fan of his alma mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
